Kydex vs. Leather Holsters: Honest Pros and Cons
October 2, 2026 – Tony Palacios
The short answer: Kydex gives you consistent retention, an easy one-handed reholster, and a holster that won't stretch or soak up sweat. Leather feels softer against the body and has a classic look, but it can stretch and soften over time, and the opening can sag closed after you draw. For most people carrying every day, Kydex is the more dependable choice. That's why every Armor Of God holster is Kydex, molded to your exact firearm.
Kydex vs. leather at a glance
| Kydex | Leather | |
|---|---|---|
| Retention | Consistent. Molded to your firearm, with an audible click. | Relies on a snug fit or a strap. Loosens as leather stretches. |
| Comfort | Firm. Comfortable once your setup is dialed in. | Softer against the skin, especially after break-in. |
| Sweat and moisture | Doesn't absorb sweat. Wipes clean. | Absorbs sweat, which can affect the leather and your firearm's finish. |
| Break-in | None. Ready out of the box. | Often needs a break-in period. |
| Durability | Holds its shape for years. Can deform in high heat. | Ages and softens over time. |
| Look | Endless colors, prints and custom designs. | Classic, traditional look. |
Why we build in Kydex
Kydex is a rigid thermoplastic. We heat it and mold it around your exact firearm model, so the holster matches the shape of your gun and holds it securely every time. Here's what that means for daily carry:
- Retention that doesn't change. The gun seats with a click you can hear and feel, and that fit stays the same over time.
- A safer, one-handed reholster. The opening at the top of the holster keeps its shape when the gun is out, so you never need your other hand to open it.
- Full trigger guard coverage that doesn't soften or fold.
- Low maintenance. Rinse it, dry it, carry it. It won't absorb sweat.
- Room for your optic. Every Armor Of God holster is pre-cut for red dot optics.
- Your style. Choose from more than 120 colors, camo patterns, faith and flag designs and specialty prints, add a carbon fiber finish, or send us your own custom design.

A clear Kydex holster shows how closely the material is molded to the firearm, including the optic cut.
The honest drawbacks of Kydex
- It's firm. Kydex doesn't flex like leather. A good gun belt, the right clip and a ModWing Claw go a long way toward all-day comfort.
- Holster wear on your firearm's finish. Any holster will cause some wear over time, and Kydex can show it a little faster at the high points of the slide. Most carriers see it as a sign of a gun that gets carried.
- Heat. Kydex can deform in high heat, like a dashboard in direct summer sun. Don't leave it in a hot car.
Where leather shines, and where it falls short
Leather has real strengths. It's soft against the skin, many people love the traditional look, and a well-made leather holster can be very comfortable once it's broken in. But leather stretches and softens with time and sweat. As it does, retention loosens, and the opening at the top can sag closed after you draw. Then you need your other hand to open it before you reholster, which is slower and less safe. Leather also needs more care, like conditioning and keeping it dry.
Which should you choose?
- You carry every day and want consistent retention: Kydex.
- You want a fast, safe, one-handed reholster: Kydex.
- You sweat a lot or live somewhere hot and humid, like Florida: Kydex.
- You run a red dot or a weapon light: Kydex, built for your exact setup.
- You value a traditional look over everything else: leather may suit you, but expect more care and a shorter prime.

Care tips for a Kydex holster
- Rinse with warm water and mild soap, then let it dry.
- Keep it out of high heat.
- Check the screws every few weeks and snug them if needed, without over-tightening.
Safety first
A holster is not a safety device and doesn't replace training. Confirm your firearm is unloaded before fitting or practicing with a new holster, make sure the trigger guard is fully covered, and keep clothing and drawstrings clear when you reholster.
