The short answer: choose an IWB (inside-the-waistband) holster if you want to carry concealed every day under a T-shirt. Choose an OWB (outside-the-waistband) holster if you want more comfort and a faster draw, and you'll either carry openly or wear a cover garment like a jacket or untucked overshirt. Many people end up owning both.

IWB vs. OWB at a glance

IWB (inside the waistband) OWB (outside the waistband)
Concealment Excellent. The gun sits inside your pants and your shirt covers the grip. Needs a cover garment to conceal.
Comfort Very good once dialed in. Takes some waistband room. Excellent. Nothing extra inside your pants.
Draw speed Fast with practice. Fastest. The grip stands away from your body.
Clothing Works with a T-shirt. You may want pants about one size up. Works with any pants. Needs a jacket or overshirt to conceal.
Best for Everyday concealed carry Range days, open carry, cooler weather, duty-style carry

Inside the waistband (IWB)

An IWB holster tucks inside your pants and attaches with a clip. Only the clip shows, and your shirt covers the grip. That's why IWB is the most popular choice for everyday concealed carry.

Common carry positions:

  • Appendix (about 12 to 1 o'clock): conceals extremely well and is quick to reach, even seated. Comfort depends on your build and the holster's shape.
  • Strong side (about 3 to 4 o'clock for right-handed carriers): a classic position that many people find comfortable all day.

Carrying a pistol in an Armor Of God IWB holster while driving

IWB carry in real life: secure and accessible, even seated behind the wheel.

What to look for in an IWB holster:

  • A fit molded to your exact firearm, so it holds the gun securely and releases cleanly.
  • Full trigger guard coverage. Non-negotiable.
  • Room for your red dot. If you run an optic, the holster needs an optic cut. Every Armor Of God holster comes pre-cut for optics.
  • The right clip for how you dress. Our standard all-plastic Quick Clip (1.5 or 1.75 inch) needs a belt. The metal Monoblock Clip works with or without a belt, and the UltiClip latches onto your clothing for the most secure hold without one. See How to Choose a Holster Clip.
  • A concealment wing. Our ModWing Claw uses your belt to rotate the grip toward your body, so the gun prints less, especially with larger pistols or appendix carry.

Outside the waistband (OWB)

An OWB holster rides on the outside of your belt. Because nothing sits inside your pants, it's the most comfortable way to carry, and the grip is easy to reach for a fast, consistent draw. The trade-off is concealment: you'll need a jacket, vest or untucked overshirt to hide it.

Mount options for our OWB holsters:

  • Paddle: slides on and off your belt in seconds.
  • Paddle with cant options: lets you adjust the angle of your draw.
  • Tech-Lock: locks onto your belt for a more secure, adjustable fit.

Want extra security for open carry? Add our SpeedLock Level 2 Hood, which adds a Level 2 retention hood over the firearm.

Which one should you choose?

  • You carry every day in a T-shirt: IWB.
  • You want maximum concealment with a compact or micro-compact pistol: IWB, appendix or strong side.
  • You carry openly, shoot at the range or take classes: OWB.
  • You live where jackets are common half the year: OWB in cool months, IWB in warm months.
  • You're just starting out: start with IWB for daily carry. Add an OWB holster for range days and training.

Don't skip the belt

Whatever you choose, a sturdy gun belt makes the biggest difference in comfort. A regular dress belt bends under the weight of a firearm, so the holster sags and shifts. A purpose-built gun belt keeps everything tight and in place. Our KORE gun belts are micro-adjustable, so you can fine-tune the fit to the notch.

The everyday essentials: a solid gun belt, a holster built for your pistol, and the Word.

Safety first

A holster is not a safety device and doesn't replace training. Always confirm your firearm is unloaded before fitting or practicing with a new holster, make sure the trigger guard is fully covered, and keep clothing and drawstrings clear when you reholster. Practice drawing and reholstering with an unloaded firearm until it's second nature, and know your local carry laws. Read our full Product Safety & Liability guidance.
